My father has always told me that taking aspirin at the very onset of a cold will keep him from getting sick. It is a tried and true method that he always swears by and he is a relatively healthy man. I don’t take too many aspirin, myself, but I have gotten into the habit of keeping it in the house ‘just in case’. Because dad told me to. Advice from dad should never be taken lightly! Since I always have aspirin around the house and it does expire eventually, I have found a few unusual uses for aspirin around the house that I thought I would share. Do you have a container of aspirin sitting in the cabinet? Not sure what to do with it? Keep reading for suggestions on what to do with aspirin besides taking it for a headache!
Unusual Uses for Aspirin Around the House
Treat bug bites and stings: Crush an aspirin with the back of a spoon on a small plate and add a drop of water. Mix to form a paste. Apply this aspirin paste to a bug bite to take out a bit of the redness and stinging. Make sure to back this with your camping supplies!
Natural Acne treatment: Just like the bug bite remedy above, a paste made with crushed aspirin and water will take some of the redness and swelling out of a zit. Store bought acne treatments are expensive so this is one of my favorite uses for aspirin. Great way to save money when you have teens!
Organic Garden Helper: Aspirin can be a big help in the organic garden. Salycilic acid (AKA asprin!) can help support roots, stems and leaf structure to create a healthier plant. It may also help your fruits and vegetables grow larger and help your plants resist disease. Add 1 adult strength aspirin to 1 gallon of water and use to water your plants.
Remove Laundry Stains: The acidity of the aspirin helps neutralize the sweat that causes armpit stains. Mix three crushed aspirins and half a cup of warm water in a bowl. Pour this liquid on the sweaty underarm stain and let sit for several hours. Wash as usual!
Preserve Cut Flowers: If your sweetheart brings you flowers for your birthday, just add a tablet of aspirin to the vase water before adding your flowers. They will stay beautiful longer than if you put them in water alone.
